Project evaluation:

In the first stage of this project, I started by gathering a lot of research anything that was relevant, even things which were not. As soon as I found something which caught my eye or I found interesting I printed it out and responded to it in my sketchbook, through mark making, extracting colours, textures, mood and shape/form. My perspective and critical approaches were seeing if the research linked, if there was a joinery and a clear vibe from it, then it was developed. My project has developed I would say, every project changes as you explore new ideas and gather more research. The theme hasn’t changed, but the way I want to express and showcase the work has. I have explored more off the body, which I found works better for me.

I found researching enjoyable in this project. I explored many different concepts and artistic outlooks, which effected my work in the best ways. I found some artisans whose work caught my eye, and I took a deeper look into them as artist, how they work, their processes, there ideas behind everything. This exposed me to many new techniques which I didn’t know before. Another analysis technique I did was extracting key words from each artisan, linking these key words to my project in some way. A textiles designer called Troy Makaza impacted my way of thinking about textiles itself, and that it’s not just knitting, as he uses silicone a lot.

I defiantly learnt some new skills from this project, I used the knitting machine for some samples, but I didn’t end up using them in my final piece. It was interesting to create something so durable, meaning it could have been shaped and used in multiple ways. The samples made from the knitting machine were fun to make but didn’t have the depth of texture I was after. I also used the heat press, which I used a lot to create a wrinkled texture. I also used the heat press for ink transfer which was fun to work with.

I planned my time over this project well I think, I am an organised person, so I write to do lists a lot. I found this helpful, to write an action plan/to do list for each day, making sure I got things done. It was also important I was being reasonable with myself and not setting a million tasks I couldn’t complete. I would also make weekly action plans, and make sure by the end of the week things were checked off. It was interesting to look back on the project proposal timetable, and see what I was able to complete, which was majority, so overall was successful.

My reflection defiantly helped me develop my ideas further, I was able to analyse what I did during the day and see what was successful and what wasn’t, this allowed me to further manage my time as well, knowing where to put my energy towards. It also helped me be realistic with my project, when reflecting you can see how much or how little you achieved in the day. This helped with setting future goals and being reasonable. One breakthrough I had was when I was designing my final piece, final garment, the whole process. I wasn’t liking how it was going with the design on the body. And I realised I hadn’t even thought about making an instillation off the body, because I was surrounded by people focusing on the body, I just wasn’t thinking about what I wanted I wrote this in my reflection and after having this breakthrough I felt a weight lifted of my shoulders. I probably would have only found this out through reflection. I think the most successful part in my project is my research as I have really gone through lots of different pathways in it, and without the research It wouldn’t mean anything. The least successful part in my project is probably sketchbook, although it’s my favourite part, I seem to have some gaps in my journey and find them hard to ‘fill’.

Techniques and methods I used to create and communicate my final outcome were using the heat press, I used it to create the wrinkles on the material, again I used the heat press for the colour and pattern. I also used my sewing machine to create creases in the material, adding an extra dimension of wrinkles. When making the sponges I had a lot of fun with the play dough and plastic, I was able to connect to the materials, change their form to exactly how I wished.

I did achieve what I set out to do in my project proposal, or at least I think I did. I set myself a task to create something which elevated people’s energies and moods when it comes to weather. I think if my piece was placed in a cloudy grey outdoor area, it would lift people’s melancholy spirits.

If I could take my ideas further, I would have made something more interactive, maybe incorporate some LED lighting to the piece itself. It would be interesting to see how people would respond to it, similar to the weather project (Tate modern) which I referred to in my research. Things I would do differently, are respond in many more ways to my samples, but in an extensive way, really extract all the information ideas and themes of my work. Rather than move on as soon as I have done some sketching.
